The Department of Otolaryngology in Poznań turned 100 years old. This beautiful jubilee will be celebrated solemnly throughout 2021. And how did it all start?
In 1918, Poland regains its independence. The first thought of a group of Polish professors was the creation of a University in Poznań, because under prussian occupance it was not possible.
The biggest problem of the new University was the complete lack of staff, hence the request was made to professors in Lviv, Krakow, Warsaw and foreign institutions to come to Poznań and help create a Medical Faculty of the new University.
In this way, Prof. Dr. Antoni Stanisław Jurasz - dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Heidelberg, a specialist ENT, came from Lviv. He organized a modest Outpatient ward of Ear and Throat Diseases at Podgórna Street, of which he became a director. This was the beginning of the university teaching of laryngology in Poznań. This institution employed Dr. Zygmunt Chrapek as a senior assistant, Stanisław Peczyński as a servant and Stanisława Kruszona as a servant.

Although Prof. Jurasz died after two years of his pioneering activity, he has already published works in the field of rhinology and voice physiology. His family tomb is on St. Wojciech's Hill in Poznań (with his son Antoni Tomasz - a well-known surgeon). In 1923, Outpatient ward was transferred to the Hospital "Przemienienia Pańskiego" and then to the rooms of the Castle at Fredry Street 7, and a significant center of scientific work and specialist training has already developed here.
